Parenting Emerging Adults Workshop

For parents of adult children struggling to launch

The transition from adolescence to adulthood is not always a seamless one, with some older adolescents struggling to “launch” and finding themselves stuck in place, no longer a child but not yet ready for the responsibilities of adulthood. Getting or working a job, living independently, and/or keeping up with activities of dailing living can feel daunting, if not downright impossible. In these cases, parents are rarely the problem, but they can be a major part of the solution.

In this program, parents will learn the factors at play in maintaining a failure-to-launch situation, including better understanding the culprits — typically some combination of executive function difficulty, avoidance as a primary mechanism of coping, and limited motivation. Parents will begin to explore their role in either maintaining or interrupting the avoidance cycle.

In accordance with the Yale Child Study Center’s SPACE-FTL (Supporting Parents of Anxious Childhood Emotions - Failure to Launch) program, parents will learn to increase their child’s confidence and motivation through a combination of supportive parenting and contingency management.
