Coaching: Executive Function, ADHD, and Academics

In-Home Coaching with TAG

What is in-home coaching?

TAG’s in-home coaches deliver the same evidence-based executive function (EF) skills programs used in our clinical practice. Sessions take place where your child lives and works, rather than in our office on the Upper West Side. Coaching is well suited to children and adolescents with ADHD, learning differences, or other forms of neurodivergence who really need the support in vivo, and/or for families who can’t easily travel to us.

We currently have coaches who are able to offer services in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. If you do not live in one of those three boroughs but are nearby, feel free to contact us anyway to see if we’re able to get to you.

What we work on

Coaching targets the practical, day-to-day obstacles that come with EF challenges. These include getting started on tasks and following through, managing time, planning and organizing, prioritizing, and building study and homework habits that hold up over time. Because coaches are in the room where the work happens, they can get into the weeds with your child. That might mean sitting with a math worksheet, breaking down a long-term project, building a study plan before a test, or working through each stage of a writing assignment, from brainstorming to the final draft. Non-academic EF work addresses daily habits and routines, like getting out the door in the morning, winding down in the evening, keeping a bedroom or backpack organized, managing screen time, and handling transitions in between. Skills are introduced and practiced hand-over-hand. Support is then gradually scaffolded back, so your child builds independence and needs less help over time.

Coaches are not clinicians. Because of that, they can offer more flexibility in session length, frequency, and location than our therapists can. Parents are kept informed and involved throughout, through regular emails and check-in meetings. Coaches also collaborate with your child’s school and with their therapist, if they have one.

Adult Coaching with TAG

Why see a coach (and not a clinician) at TAG?

TAG’s clinicians are licensed to provide psychological services in New York (and some are licensed in neighboring states as well), and are unfortunately unable to work with clients living in other states or countries. But because our coaches are trained in the same EF skills programs we use in our clinical practice, they can deliver the same evidence-based executive function (EF) skills programs used in our clinical practice, virtually, wherever clients happen to live.

Occasionally, local adult clients want help where they live or work — for instance, to organize materials or set up routines at home or in the office. In such cases, coaches may travel and have sessions on site.

Adult ADHD/EF Coaching

Coaching addresses the practical obstacles that make work and daily life harder than they need to be. These include managing time, planning and prioritizing, getting started on tasks and following through, meeting deadlines, and keeping track of everything in between.

Sessions are hands-on. Your coach will work through the actual material in front of you. That might mean triaging and developing prevention strategies for an overflowing inbox, mapping out a large project at work, setting up a system for bills and paperwork, or creating the structure and routine to make the most of your day. Coaching will also address lifestyle habits like sleep, exercise, meal planning, and household management skills. Skills are introduced and practiced together, then gradually scaffolded back, so you build independence and rely less on outside support over time.

Note: coaches are not clinicians, and coaching is not therapy. Coaches don’t diagnose or treat mental health conditions. If something comes up that would be better addressed in therapy, we’ll help you think through next steps, including finding a licensed mental health provider.

Our Coaching Team

Our coaches come from a range of backgrounds. Most are master’s-level educators or graduate students in psychology or related fields. Every coach is trained in our EF skills programs and supervised by our clinical team, so the work stays consistent with the care TAG provides in the office.
